Four Hair Clippers from Wahl, Philips Norelco, and Andis

The best hair clippers for men vary from one person to the next. These are my favorite options across budgets, skill levels, and haircut goals—all proven performers for buzzing at home.

JUMP TO THE PICKS

Hair clippers are one of those grooming purchases where the “best” option depends entirely on what you’re trying to accomplish. Are you giving yourself a weekly buzz cut? Trimming your kids’ hair? Maintaining a fade between barber visits? Traveling frequently? Some clippers prioritize power and longevity, others prioritize simplicity, while a few try to bridge the gap between barber-grade performance and at-home usability. After years of testing clippers from Wahl, Andis, Philips Norelco, and more, these are the devices I’d recommend for every type of home haircutter.

You might also notice there aren’t many brands represented here on my list. That’s because, as far as at-home clippers go, the brands I rely on for quality-grade devices (that even barbers would endorse at home), are quite limited. Wahl and Andis have dominated professional and consumer clipping for decades, while Philips Norelco has carved out its own lane with exceptionally capable multitaskers. Plenty of newer brands have entered the category, but when it comes to reliability, guard systems, replacement parts, motor quality, and long-term ownership, I still find myself returning to the same handful of names over and over again. In a perfect world, I’d tell you all to buy the BaByliss Pro FX gold hair clipper (I mean, have you seen it? Beautiful.) I just think it’s too pro-grade for most at-home guys. But the roster below? Perfect for ya.

A Note on Tapering and Zero-Gapping

I think this is helpful to know for at-home users, too: If you’re shopping for hair clippers, you’ll quickly encounter terms like taper lever and zero-gapping. A taper lever simply adjusts the cutting length without changing guards, making it useful for blending between lengths or creating softer transitions. Zero-gapping is a more advanced modification that reduces the space between the clipper blades to achieve an ultra-close cut. While many barbers use zero-gapped tools for fades and precision work, most at-home users don’t need it. In fact, it increases the risk of nicks and irritation. Unless you’re specifically trying to learn barbering techniques, focus on a clipper with a good guard system. A taper lever is far secondary to that, and you should never need to zero gap as an amateur.

Best Overall Hair Clippers: Andis reVITE

BUY ANDIS reVITE

If you’re willing to spend a little more upfront, the Andis reVITE is the clipper I’d recommend above every other option. It strikes the rare balance of feeling professional-grade without becoming intimidating for someone cutting hair at home. The motor is powerful, the guards are exceptionally secure, and the entire device feels built for years of use rather than a few seasons.

What ultimately puts it over the top is how approachable it remains despite that professional pedigree. You get the cutting performance barbers expect, but without a steep learning curve. If you want one clipper that can handle virtually anything you throw at it, start here.

Best Budget Hair Clippers: Wahl Color Pro Cordless

BUY WAHL COLOR PRO CORDLESS: STANDALONE // WITH TRIMMER SET

The Wahl Color Pro Cordless has become one of my favorite grooming tools to recommend because it’s almost impossible to mess up. The color-coded guard system removes one of the most annoying parts of clipping your own hair: figuring out which attachment you’re supposed to use.

It’s an especially great choice for families, first-time buzzers, and anyone who values simplicity over bells and whistles. Despite the approachable price, its performance is excellent. It cuts cleanly, includes a taper lever for shorter work, and proves why Wahl has been the dominant consumer clipper brand for decades.

Best Barber-Grade Hair Clippers: Wahl Magic Clip Cordless

BUY WAHL MAGIC CLIP CORDLESS

More Wahl love loading… If you want the clipper most likely to be sitting on your barber’s station right now, it’s probably the Wahl Magic Clip. This thing has become an industry staple for good reason.

It’s lightweight, powerful, and incredibly maneuverable. The taper lever gives you more flexibility for blending and fading, while the excellent guard system keeps everything consistent and secure throughout the cut. I still think most people should leave true skin fades to the professionals, but if you’re interested in learning more advanced techniques at home, this is the clipper I’d put in your hands.

Most importantly, it doesn’t feel overly complicated. You get genuine barbershop credibility without sacrificing usability.

Best Beginner Hair Clippers: Andis enVISION

BUY ANDIS enVISION

If you’re buying your first set of hair clippers, the Andis enVISION is one of the easiest places to start. It delivers many of the benefits you’d expect from a professional-grade clipper, but packages them in a way that feels far more intuitive for beginners.

The front-mounted adjustment dial is a great example. Instead of relying on the traditional taper lever found on most barber clippers, the enVISION uses a system that feels more familiar and approachable. The LED battery display is another thoughtful touch, letting you know exactly how much charge remains before you start cutting.

I also appreciate how quietly this thing runs. Parents cutting their kids’ hair will especially notice the difference. Add in a three-hour runtime, dependable reinforced guards, and enough versatility to occasionally handle beard-trimming duties, and you’ve got one of the most beginner-friendly clippers on the market.

Best Self-Buzzer: Wahl Self-Cut Pro Rechargeable

BUY WAHL SELF-CUT PRO RECHARGEABLE

Yes, all clippers are designed to cut hair, but the Wahl Self-Cut Pro is designed to cut your own hair. The unique handle shape makes it dramatically easier to navigate the back and sides of your head, which is where most self-buzzers struggle. Anyone who’s attempted a DIY buzz cut knows that ergonomics quickly become more important than raw cutting power.

Wahl took everything people already liked about its clipping systems and repackaged it into something that genuinely solves a problem. If you live alone, don’t want to ask for help, or simply prefer handling your own maintenance, this is one of the smartest clipper designs on the market.

Best Travel Hair Clippers: Wahl Peanut

BUY WAHL PEANUT: CORDED CLASSIC // CORDLESS PEANUT LI

The Wahl Peanut has achieved near-iconic status among barbers and grooming enthusiasts. It’s compact, dependable, and surprisingly versatile given its size.Part of its appeal is that it functions equally well as a beard trimmer and a hair clipper. That dual-purpose functionality makes it especially appealing for travel, where every item in your dopp kit has to justify its space.

Personally, I still have a soft spot for the original corded version. It’s the one that built the Peanut’s reputation over the years. That said, the newer Peanut Li adds cordless convenience and USB-C charging, making it the more practical option for most travelers today. (Even if I think it’s ugly now, ha.)

Best Multigroomer: Philips Norelco Multigroom 9000 // All-in-One Trimmer Series 9000

BUY PHILIPS NORELCO MULTIGROOM 9000
STEPDOWN OPTION: MULTIGROOM 7000

Most multigroomers make compromises when it comes to clipping hair, but the Philips Norelco Multigroom 9000 is a rare exception. This device can handle beard trimming, body grooming, detailing, nose hairs, and hair clipping from a single platform. (And for this, it received one of our first-ever Blue Ribbon awards, given to the Best Grooming Products ever.) The reason it succeeds so well as a clipper? It actually has enough power to function as a legitimate clipper, whereas most multipurpose tools don’t have the muscle to cut through dense head hair.

The dedicated T-blade attachment paired with the clipping guards creates a surprisingly capable haircutting setup, while the rest of the attachments can replace several standalone grooming devices entirely. The battery life is also exceptional. During testing, I managed roughly 17 hours of runtime from the first single charge. (!!)

If you’d rather own one excellent grooming device than a drawer full of specialized tools, this is the one I’d buy. And if you want to save some money, the Multigroom 7000 retains much of the same clipping capability while trimming back a few premium extras and slightly less battery life, but still quite respectable stats across the board.
