The Best Body Hair Trimmers

From Panasonic to Manscaped, these grooming devices make it easy to trim down hair, anywhere and everywhere.

Body grooming doesn’t need a ton of explaining; I like to provide necessary education on devices (like choosing between foil and rotary shavers), so that you can make informed decisions. But the best body groomer really depends on where you intend to use the device. Your body, yes, but is this thing dedicated to the body—and moreover, do you need it for your backhair, and are you doing the task yourself, versus having your roommate or +1 manage?

Similarly, are you interested in a groin-dedicated tool? Lots of guys are very church-and-state about these things, while others want one device for face, head, chest, groin, etc…

Thus, in addition to intent, the difference between a good device and a frustrating one almost always comes down to design. Can it actually maneuver around your body? Can it reach your back without feeling like a gymnastics routine? Can it trim sensitive areas without making you overly cautious every second?

That’s why there isn’t just one best manscaper. There are a few different lanes, depending on how you groom. And the key is buying for your actual habits and needs.

So below, I’ve broken down the best mens body trimmers (in my tested opinion as a very hair men’s grooming editor for ~14 years at GQ, Esquire, Men’s Health and many more). My picks are based on what they’re actually good at: design, usability, price, and where on your body they perform best. So you can just pick the one that fits your routine and move on.

Shortcut: Which Body Groomer Should You Buy?

If you don’t mind spoilers (or just want to cut out all of the lengthy details below), then here is your cheat sheet for which device will be best for you.

  • If you want the best dedicated body groomer, buy the Panasonic ER-GK80. It is the smartest design of the bunch, and it is especially strong on back, shoulders, chest, and overall maneuverability. Its customizable length trimmer is a big bonus compared to its stepdown option, the Panasonic ER-GK60. That “lesser” model is still fantastic, and will be a better value buy for people who mostly trim back hair, shoulders, and pits (but who don’t need much customization on the chest or groin).
  • If you want a head-to-toe multitasker that can handle face and body in one lightweight device, get the Philips Norelco OneBlade 360 Face + Body. It is also a terrific facial shaver (an alternative for using manual blades).
  • If you want the best beard trimmer with occasional body hair needs, get the Braun All-in-One Trimmer 9. It was also selected as our best beard trimmer overall in another contest.
  • If you want a trim-and-shave hybrid for body hair, get the Philips Norelco Bodygroom 7000, though the brand’s own OneBlade 360 Face + Body also works great here.
  • If you want a groin-first tool, the Manscaped Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra is the most dynamic, while the OneBlade Intimate is the simplest budget pick.

If you want to see me blab my way through this article. Please note, even in the short time since publishing, there have been some changes to this video, which are reflected in this article. The Philips Norelco 7000 has evolved into a new head-swapping device (with an arm attachment for over-the-shoulder trimming), effectively replacing the previous 7000 and absorbing the now-defunct 5000. Also, Happy Nuts has discontinued its Lumberjack lineup, in favor of the Ballber trimmers.

To talk about one of these devices, you need to talk about both of them. (Which I did do, in fact, in a comparison article, where I also gave the more muscled-up ER-GK80 a Blue Ribbon Award as one of the best grooming products of all time.)

Panasonic Body Groomer ER-GK80-S
ER-GK80

The Panasonic body groomer line remains my favorite in this category because the design is simply smarter than most of the competition. And the main reason is its vertical trimming head: Unlike a standard beard-trimmer shape with a horizontal mouth, this one gets into tighter contours far more easily, whether you are navigating around the groin, down the shoulders, or across your own back. It is especially useful if you do not have a partner helping with back hair, since you can actually maneuver it around your shoulders and neck without feeling like you are twisting a brick in reverse.

The ER-GK80 (again, the newer device, a best-ever product) is the winner because it gives you more customization on chest hair lengths (as opposed to two swap-on guards for the original ER-GK60 device). Instead, alongside the familiar protective Skin Guard, the 80 adds an adjustable 3–12 mm comb, which makes it much better for chest hair, pubic hair, and anywhere else you do not want to mow everything down to near-bare. If you like keeping your chest fuzzy but tidy, this is the better buy. It is a little top-heavy and slightly bulkier with the guard attached, but the tradeoff is worth it for the added versatility.

The ER-GK60 is still an easy recommendation for the right guy, especially if your main concern is trimming back hair, shoulders, armpits, or other larger areas. It gets you most of the same ergonomic benefits for less money, and is the one to buy if length customization is less important than simply having a well-designed body groomer that is easy to steer.

Best Head-to-Toe Hair Trimmer: Philips Norelco OneBlade 360 Face + Body

The OneBlade is a different kind of tool than the Panasonic. It is less about broad length customization and more about simple, familiar hybrid grooming. If the Panasonic is your dedicated body groomer, the OneBlade Face + Body is the one for the guy who wants one lightweight device that can clean up facial hair, body hair, and the occasional chest perimeter without much fuss.

Showcasing the OneBlade 360 Face + Body

Its biggest selling point is the cartridge-like feel. It handles more like a razor than a traditional trimmer, which makes it especially approachable for guys who are newer to electric grooming or who do not need to manage a lot of dense hair. (In my roundup on the best beard trimmers, I also cited it as the best hybrid tool, the best minimalist tool, and the best for first-time users. It’s so fool proof.)

So with this one, you can flip between facial detailing and body maintenance without adding a whole new tool to your rotation. The main tradeoff is that it is not as customizable as the Panasonic ER-GK80, and the blades need replacing every few months with consistent use. (The brand says every 4 months, buuuut I think you can stretch that out to every 6, unless you are mowing through coarse patches on the daily.) That ongoing blade cost should count for something though, in literal terms of added budget. Still, for convenience and overall usability, it is one of the easiest picks on this list to recommend.

Best Ball Trimmer: Philips Norelco OneBlade Intimate

Here is the stepdown groin-centric version of the aforementioned device. The OneBlade Intimate is not the most impressive device here in terms of battery or features, but it earns its place because it does one specific job well at a very approachable price. If you want a dedicated groin tool and do not care about trimming your back, chest, beard, and everything else with the same device, this is a very easy one to understand. It is lightweight, compact, unintimidating, and designed to minimize the chances of nicking anything you would rather not nick. (AKA your balls, good sir.)

OneBlade Intimate, up close and personal.
OneBlade Intimate, up close and personal.

Again, this is not the Swiss Army knife of groomers. It is more like a low-cost, sensible insurance policy for below-the-belt maintenance. The SkinProtect-style blade and included comb make it a good buy for guys who want to keep things neat without getting too close, while the bare blade still gives you a tidy finish when needed.

I would not choose it as my only body groomer unless your needs are extremely limited, and the 30-minute runtime on an 8-hour charge is objectively weak. But if your goal is simply “I want a dedicated junk trimmer that is easy to use and does not cost much,” then the OneBlade Intimate is perhaps the clearest answers.

Best Trimmer/Shaver Hybrid: Philips Norelco Bodygroom 7000

BUY PHILIPS NORELCO BODYGROOM 7000

Yeah, you don’t have to tell me… I know this list overindexes on Philips Norelco. But hey, they rule the category overall.

And the latest generation of their Bodygroom 7000 is an actual design upgrade over the older versions of this device. (RIP to those legends, even though they had shortcomings.) Its swappable heads (as opposed to double-ended duality) makes more sense. Instead of flipping the device over, you swap between heads depending on the result you want: one for trimming things down evenly, the other for taking things shorter with a skin-safe foil finish. (You also have a dual-end trim similar to the OneBlade design, and different body hair length guards.)

It requires a bit more labor (woe is me) compared to the built-in two-sided design. The included back attachment-extender-arm thing is the other big selling point (akin to the old 5000 model that also helped you trim up over your shoulder). It’s a pinch clunkier than the Panasonic’s brilliant design, since you have various angles to manage with the flexible joint. But still, it is manageable.

For me, this is still best for the guy who wants one device that can customize, as in… trim body hair neatly and take certain areas closer without reaching for a separate shaver. The adjustable trimming comb is the main strength. It gives you enough range to tidy chest hair, stomach hair, pits, and groin hair without flattening everything to one overly short length. The trimming side is still the bigger everyday asset; personally I’m only ever shaving my back and shoulders while trimming the rest, but to each his own.

In other words, this is best for someone who wants optional closeness, not necessarily a full bare-skin body shave every time. It is also a better fit than the Panasonic if your priority is having both trim and shave capability in one kit, whereas the Panasonic is still the smarter pure trimming design.

  • Charge Time: ~1 hour (with quick charge)
  • Wet/Dry: Waterproof, shower-safe

Best Beard Trimmer That Doubles for Body Hair: Braun All-in-One Trimmer 9

BUY BRAUN SERIES 9 ALL-IN-ONE TRIMMER

This is the pick for the guy who does not want a dedicated body groomer sitting next to a dedicated beard trimmer sitting next to a clipper and a nose-hair tool. The Braun All-in-One Trimmer 9 is the closest thing here to a true all-purpose grooming kit, and it is especially compelling if beard maintenance is your top priority but you still want something capable on the body. In fact, we crowned it the best overall beard trimmer, for what it’s worth…

Showing the beloved Precision Wheel on the Braun Series 9 trimmer.
That beloved Precision Wheel on the Braun Series 9 trimmer.

The big feature is the Precision Wheel (and it deserves to be capitalized in name), which gives you far more nuanced length control than most body groomers even attempt. That makes it especially appealing if you are picky about beard shape and body-hair length alike. You get 41 different 0-5mm lengths with just two attachments to swap between. It is SO easy. Both guys in my household use it (primarily for the beard, since we prefer the Panasonic ER-GK80 for the body).

To that note, this is not my first choice if your only concern is manscaping. (Again, it’s the Panasonic, hands down.) Braun’s multitasker is bulkier in hand than the Panasonic, but if you want one system to handle beard, body, haircuts, detailing, and cleanup, then the value equation changes.

The long battery life is another major advantage. In practical terms, this is the choice for the guy who wants maximum versatility and is willing to pay for it, especially if beard grooming is just as important to him as body grooming.

If you want something purpose-built for the groin and you are willing to spend a bit more for extra convenience features, the Manscaped Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra is the best dedicated pubic-hair pick here. Its biggest strengths are the groin-first design choices: the LED light, the guard lineup, and the inclusion of both a trimmer head and a foil option in the same package. That makes it more capable than a lot of so-called intimate trimmers, especially if you like the option of going shorter down there without reaching for another device.

It still is not as flexible as the best full-body groomers, but that is not really its job. One complaint: It can be a bit fussy to get the attachments swapped out. (But since I prefer it as a groin trimmer, I just keep the one locked in place.)

Balls Archibald V3 Groin Trimmer

The Balls Archibald V3 is a utilitarian alternative. It is compact, easy to stash, and a dedicated pube trimmer that does not try to be a full-body solution. The SackSafe guard is the headline feature, built to reduce nicks in sensitive areas, and it does its job well for routine maintenance. I wouldn’t use it to manage chest or back hair personally. It is a dedicated pube trimmer.
