How to Choose a Hair Transplant Clinic

Here is how to screen clinics—and the best questions to ask them—before committing to such an important procedure.

Getting a hair transplant can be one of the most rewarding investments you make in your appearance, but the process starts long before you get on the operating table. Choosing the right clinic determines not only how natural your results will look, but also how safe and professional your experience will be.

As someone who has covered men’s grooming and travel for years—and undergone the procedure myself—I’ve seen how drastically clinic standards vary around the world. Here are the key things to know and the questions to ask before you book.

1. Know Who Performs the Surgery

Many clinics advertise their top surgeon’s name but rely on technicians or trainees for most of the work. Always ask who will be performing each stage of your transplant. The doctor will not likely be the one extracting and implanting the grafts themselves—and that’s OK! At small clinics, you do pay for this care from the doctor, but at a much steeper price. At large clinics, the doctor will often be more supervisory and do an initial screening and signoff, while going between procedure rooms all day to check on patients and technicians

A reputable clinic will be transparent about their namesake surgeon’s involvement. There is no shame if s/he is not the one performing the procedure, either; remember, sometimes those technicians have the best trained hands in the biz, since they’re performing the same task day in, day out. I wouldn’t describe this procedure as overly invasive, and really enjoy the results I got my from technicians in Istanbul.

2. Be Vigilant with Before/After Photos

Before-and-after galleries can be misleading. Look for consistent lighting, angles, and time frames in patient photos. Avoid clinics that only showcase extreme transformations or use stock images. Seek out video testimonials or independent reviews from real patients who share unfiltered results—and ideally, whose case or hair type resembles your own. And if you have curly or coiled hair, see the note below about that, too.

Authenticity in their portfolio is a reflection of how honest they will be with your expectations.

3. Weigh the Pros and Cons of Staying Local vs. Going Abroad

Turkey and other medical-tourism destinations are known for lower costs and high volume, but that scale can sometimes compromise personalized care. Staying local often allows for easier follow-up visits and accountability if complications arise. On the other hand, reputable clinics abroad may offer world-class expertise at a fraction of the U.S. price. The decision comes down to your comfort level with travel, recovery logistics, and long-term access to your surgeon.

4. Ask What the Price Includes

Hair transplant quotes can vary widely, and what you get for your money matters more than the total. Some clinics bundle consultation, procedure, anesthesia, post-op medications, and follow-up care into a single fee. Others may charge extra for graft counts, hotel stays, or aftercare kits. Clarify every cost upfront, and avoid hidden fees that appear once you arrive. Transparency is a good sign you’re dealing with a legitimate practice.

5. Be Wary of Minimums

Some clinics require a minimum graft count to justify your booking, which can lead to unnecessary extractions or inflated prices. If your hair loss pattern only requires a smaller session, a trustworthy surgeon will tailor the procedure to your needs rather than upsell you. Overharvesting grafts early can limit your options for future procedures if your hair loss progresses.

It does make sense that they charge a minimum for the time it takes for you to occupy that room and the clinic’s time, but there shouldn’t be a minimum based on graft count.

6. Imperative Note for Curly and Coiled Hair

Patients with curly, coiled, or afro-textured hair need a clinic experienced in working with these grafts. The angle and curvature of the follicles require different extraction tools and implantation techniques. In the wrong hands, it can lead to higher transection rates and patchy results. Ask to see before-and-after cases with your hair type specifically before committing to a clinic. Many clinics with this experience will advertise as much, especially hair transplants for black men with coily hair or anyone with proclivities for keloiding.

7. Do Initial Groundwork with a Local Dermatologist

Before scheduling any transplant consultation, start by seeing a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss. They can help diagnose your condition, assess whether you are a good candidate for surgery, and recommend treatments that may help stabilize shedding first. Going into a transplant from an informed, medically guided position will protect your investment and improve your outcome.

Remember: Choosing the best clinic for a hair transplant is less about finding the cheapest or most glamorous option, and more about trusting the people handling your scalp. Take time to vet every detail, ask uncomfortable questions, and compare multiple opinions. A responsible decision today ensures your future hairline looks natural, healthy, and permanent.
